Fellowship of Long Rodders

Fellowship of Long Rodders

By Phillip Potter, aka TarDevil

Driving to the river recently I passed an elderly fella walking by the road and he raised his hand to me as I drove by.  Got me wondering about salutations, waving, acknowledging folks ya don’t know – never met and perhaps never will.  Just a friendly nature?  The desire to impart a wee speck of goodwill and a warm “hello?” I dunno, do you? Native Watercraft Ultimate 12

5408018First off, I just want to reiterate that in our sport there is never going to be a “perfect” yak or boat. To cover every scenario you would probably need 2 or 3. However, when money is limited and we cannot buy 2 or 3, then it is best to find the one that is the most versatile to fish the rivers we like to fish. The Ultimate 12 is a decent boat for certain situations and a good boat for others.  For kayak fishing in rivers it is critical that people understand it is not a boat for beginners. It is an intermediate and advanced boat for people who understand currents and how to paddle in swift water. If you are using this boat only on calm water, then it is a viable option for beginners. “PawPaw” Reese, April’s River Basser of the Month

“PawPaw” Reese, April’s River Basser of the Month

Paw Paw's River HawgCongratulations to Tom “PawPaw” Reese, RiverBassin.com’s basser of the month for April 2009. Tom resides in Molena, GA, and his favorite river bass is Georgia’s famed shoal bass. PawPaw never stops learning and it is the main reason he was blessed to catch his personal best river largemouth recently – a 7lb 11oz hawg! He caught this fish by researching rivers within a reasonable distance from his house and found an overlooked spot. He invited RiverBassin.com member RatherBfishin’ to join him and sure enough Tom’s research paid off. There’s nothing like catching the big one from a spot that you’ve researched, found, explored and then executed, huh Tom?!? Continue Reading

“Uconn, Husky Shoal Bass”

“Uconn, Husky Shoal Bass”

This is the latest RiverBassin TV episode where Drew guides Tom, from Connecticut, down in south Georgia to catch a shoaliemonster.  I think you’ll find this one entertaining and may even want to hire Drew yourself so he can try and get you on some big river bass as well.

The Balancer™ Rod Balancing System

The Balancer™ Rod Balancing System

Any of you ever watch the TV program called “Hunt for Big Fish” starring Larry Dahlberg?  Well, on one of his shows he demonstrated how he balances his long fishing rods with a weight kit he designed and is sold by the Bass Pro Shops.  I have a 7 1/2 ft graphite flipping stick that I have tried to use for about a year and it was very uncomfortable to fish with.  I personally preferred to fish with my 6 1/2 ft. medium heavy rods.  Well, for fishing heavier baits like swim baits or big topwater plugs I wanted to use the longer rod, but for the above reasons I just couldn’t force myself to do it.  A few days ago I was at Bass Pro Shops to buy some stuff and decided to purchase the “rod balancing system” they sell.  It comes with instructions on how to balance your rod.  I fished with it yesterday almost all day long and you wouldn’t believe the difference it made.  The kit makes the rod feel lighter and it enables you to set the hook very quickly.  I’m glad I bought it!  Looks like this rod will be used much more in the coming months. Cool In my opinion, it’s well worth the $8.99 I paid for it.  Click on the picture of the kit above for more details.

XTOOLS Digital Scales – the best river scale?

xtools digital scaleThese are the best and easiest scales to use in the river, in my opinion.  If you are someone like me who is going to get things wet on the river, I suggest you spend the extra cash and buy this scale.  Yes they do cost $60 but last year I went through 3 scales and spent well over $60 anyway so I should have bought these first.

The are super easy to use.  The batteries are not expensive and last a long time.  They are waterproof, float and the fish will never flop off the scale due to the unique gripping system. Continue Reading

Fella Fishermen and Lucky Fellas

Fella Fishermen and Lucky Fellas

By:  Phillip Potter, aka TarDevil

On a beautiful June day in 2007 I came to two important conclusion; 1) flyrods and sunglasses are perfect tools for something other than catching fish, and 2) ALWAYS bring my camera.

I ached all over.  I was so sunburned I glowed.  But it had been a satisfying day… not particularly productive (three smallies and several green sunfish caught and released) but six hours of blessed solitude on a gorgeous day. Continue Reading

Little Tennessee River

Little Tennessee River

Article By: Sam Potts (SmallieSam)
Little Tennessee River
About The River:
The Little Tennessee River flows northwest from it’s headwaters in Northeast Georgia and on across Western North Carolina until it’s confluence with the Tennessee River. Starting as a small stream in Rabun Co., it meanders gently through the farmland of Southern Macon Co. in NC until it’s confluence with the Cullasaja River in the town of Franklin, NC. After its impoundment at Lake Emory in Franklin, it flows again through the beautiful Blue Ridge farm country until it is impounded again at Fontana Lake. Continue Reading
