Gear Review: Cablz™ Eyewear Rentention

Cablz Eyewear Rentention ReviewTrips Used: 3

Pros: The new Cablz™ system for eyewear retention (www.cablz.com) is truly a unique and clever design because it never touches your neck while the glasses are on.  Yet, if for some reason you take them off they will not get lost since they will hang from your neck.  The thin wire (or mono if you have the mono version) will never get all sweaty and dirty from your neck since it is so thin and can always be rinsed.  The rubber inserts slide onto any glasses very easy and yet are Read the full story

Tricking out a solo canoe for fishing

old town 119

Article by: Dale Oakey (JustFishin)

Over the years I’ve probably canoed and waded a few thousand miles on rivers and streams east of the Mississippi.  As I’ve gotten older the two-man canoes I use seemed to have gotten much heavier. To compensate for age and to extend my river fishing life I purchased an Old Town Discovery 119 which has become my go-to boat. Why a canoe over other options? Primarily because Read the full story

Gear Review: Garmin GPSMAP® 76Cx

Garmin GPSMAP 76CxTrips Used: 10

Pros: Having previously owned the Etrex Legend (until I dropped it in the river!), which does not float, I decided I needed to upgrade from just waterproof, to waterproof and floating.  This is where the GPSMAP 76Cx fits in perfectly.  The fact that it floats is the main “pro” to this unit in my opinion.  Over my many years on the river I have learned that no matter how much more it costs, it is always better to Read the full story

PaddleCart: The “Ultimate” Kayak and Canoe Cart?

paddle cart kayak cart…There are so many different styles of carts available on the market today what kind of cart is right for your particular needs? I own a 12’ sit-on-top (SOT) kayak, a 15’ canoe, and a small 10’ sit-in-kayak. The company that makes my 12’ kayak has a specific scupper-hole cart for my kayak; however, it will not work with my other small boats. So instead of buying two separate carts, or trying to build one from PVC (I’m not a great do-it-yourselfer), I went on the search for the one DO-IT-ALL cart.

After a lot of research I found Read the full story

The Balancer™ Rod Balancing System

The Balancer™ Rod Balancing System

Any of you ever watch the TV program called “Hunt for Big Fish” starring Larry Dahlberg?  Well, on one of his shows he demonstrated how he balances his long fishing rods with a weight kit he designed and is sold by the Bass Pro Shops.  I have a 7 1/2 ft graphite flipping stick that I have tried to use for about a year and it was very uncomfortable to fish with.  I personally preferred to fish with my 6 1/2 ft. medium heavy rods.  Well, for fishing heavier baits like swim baits or big topwater plugs I wanted to use the longer rod, but for the above reasons I just couldn’t force myself to do it.  A few days ago I was at Bass Pro Shops to buy some stuff and decided to purchase the “rod balancing system” they sell.  It comes with instructions on how to balance your rod.  I fished with it yesterday almost all day long and you wouldn’t believe the difference it made.  The kit makes the rod feel lighter and it enables you to set the hook very quickly.  I’m glad I bought it!  Looks like this rod will be used much more in the coming months. Cool In my opinion, it’s well worth the $8.99 I paid for it.  Click on the picture of the kit above for more details.

XTOOLS Digital Scales – the best river scale?

xtools digital scaleThese are the best and easiest scales to use in the river, in my opinion.  If you are someone like me who is going to get things wet on the river, I suggest you spend the extra cash and buy this scale.  Yes they do cost $60 but last year I went through 3 scales and spent well over $60 anyway so I should have bought these first.

The are super easy to use.  The batteries are not expensive and last a long time.  They are waterproof, float and the fish will never flop off the scale due to the unique gripping system. Read the full story
